Hungry Caterpillars, by Oaks and Firs

Monday, 9 May 2016

Group 1 from Oaks and Firs had a wonderful morning making and feeding their hungry caterpillars! First, they searched the forest to find a coloured caterpillar body…P1120146P1120147

Then they found a stick to twist it around…then added a head. The children were very proud of their efforts!

Next, we looked at the new painted stones Mrs. Smith had made for the mud kitchen. Lots of them had featured in the Hungry Caterpillar story…and the children thoroughly enjoyed using them to make lots of delicious Caterpillar meals!

Willows’ Bug Cafe!

Wednesday, 4 May 2016

Willows just LOVE using the mud kitchen! Today they selected a mini-beast to make a meal for…then chose from a range of ‘ingredients’.

Some of the dishes on the menu today included slug stew, ant pie and beetle cake

Meet the renamed Mr Mud! He was so busy stirring and mixing, that even his glasses got splashed in sloppy mud!

Willows children also enjoyed more bug hunting-catching lots of very big beetles today, ‘forest painting’ with coloured mud and using the mini-beast picture cards which they found buried in the digging pit last week…this time they took turns to bury them for their friends to find.

These children enjoyed climbing…hiding…and relaxing in the sunshine. What a great spot for sunbathing!

Maples’ mini-beasts

Tuesday, 3 May 2016

Maples had a very productive morning!

While mini-beast hunting continued, salt-dough versions of the creatures we found, were made around the log circle. The children chose natural materials to give them wings, legs, eyes or antennae.

Busy, busy, busy…

P1110010P1110005P1110015

Mini-beasts were also painted…the children first made mud and then added chalk (which they crushed with a stone and mixed into the mud to make different colours)

Back in Hollies…the marvellous mini-beasts were displayed for all to see…can you guess what they are?

Wildflowers and new signs…

Tuesday, 3 May 2016

A busy lunchtime today at Langley Forest School today! First a willing group of workers helped to plant some wildflower seeds near to our entrance gates.  These were kindly donated by a member of St James church, Mere Green, who have been involved in a project called Grow Wild sponsored by Kew Gardens.

The children worked hard to plant these seeds…we are looking forward to seeing them grow!

After this, some new signs were put up…ready to be discovered in the morning!

Willows dig for treasure!

Wednesday, 27 April 2016

Willows started their session by helping to retell the Superworm story…they remembered it well, complete with the Superworm Chant!

Then, as they enjoyed digging so much last week, their task was to find Superworm’s mini-beast friends…buried in the digging pit.

After naming the creatures, the next task was to find not pictures-but the real things!

We found and looked closely at lots of different mini-beasts. Then after a warming hot chocolate, chose our own activities.

Marvellous Maples Minibeast hunt!

Tuesday, 26 April 2016

Maples were fantastic today! They have been working hard learning the names of the creatures in the Superworm story. To help them to remember the names, we played a fun game at the start of the session…                                     We sang “Superworm is super long, Superworm is super strong, Find his friend -don’t get it wrong, And then we’ll sing more Superworm song!”

Everyone took turns to listen for their name, then ran around the circle to select the creature Mrs. Smith named. (remember to click the photos to make them bigger)

Then we headed into the forest to look for real mini-beasts.

We looked closely at a spider, discussed what an insect looked like and named lots of mini-beasts. If you would like to find out about some insects, there are some great videos here-http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/life/Insect/by/rank/all

Squirrels and bugs and a monkey’s dinner!

Wednesday, 20 April 2016

A gloriously sunny afternoon brought out lots of wildlife today! We spotted two squirrels…we watched the first one as he climbed a tree and the second one joined us as we played on the swing!

Superworm!

Wednesday, 20 April 2016

This term, it’s Maples and Willows turn to visit Forest School. We will be using the story Superworm as a starting point for our sessions. You can read the story here…

Both classes listened to the story and then explored the forest looking for all the hidden story characters- marking them off as they did so.
