Communication Support

Communication is a key life skill which has a huge impact on independence. It covers much more than speaking and as such, we use a range of strategies to support communication development.

Makaton

Makaton is a system which uses signs and symbols, focusing on key words. Staff at Langley use Makaton throughout the day to support communication and provide visual prompts. For some of our pupils the use of signing can be the key part of getting their message across, it can help clarify or supplement their speech.

More information can be found on the Makaton website.

Widgit Symbols

To provide support with the written word, we use Widgit symbols to add picture clues to key words. The use of communicate in print programme means many of our signs around school include the use of widget symbols as well as a visual timetable within each classroom.

Speech and Language Therapist

Referrals are made to the NHS speech and language department and also Denise Ainsworth who is bought in for a day a week to enhance the school provision.

The children are assessed and the therapists play a key role in the on-going support of the children’s communication development working closely with class teams/intervention team to implement and support speech and language programmes as required by individual children or small groups.

The therapists will also advise on the use of specialist resources for those children that require them including electronic communication aids and communication books.
