Welcome tiny caterpillars!

A really exciting week for us all, as we welcomed our ‘just hatched’ caterpillars! We enjoyed watching them wriggle around in their special pot, complete with all the food they will need until they form their chrysalises. We are all looking forward to watching them grow…
Oaks class helped to retell the ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ story and talked about how caterpillars turn into butterflies. They had fun hunting for hidden pictures from the story, making caterpillars with elder sticks, making wood-slice caterpillars and making symmetrical butterfly patterns using squashed blackberries… 
Willows and Maples made these beautiful butterflies using a Japanese art form called hapa-zome. They used a hammer to bash petals and leaves, releasing the dye into the cloth. When complete, they used a peg to make the butterfly’s body.
They also made some elder stick caterpillars and used the alphabet stones to make the different words from the butterfly life-cycle. As well as making lots of their own fun…
