Secondary Transfers

Menu
Going to secondary school is a big step in the learning development of our pupils and it is important to choose the right secondary school. Claire Hynes, is available to support and advise parents/ carers in the process.

All choices for secondary schools have to be submitted to the Local Authority when the pupils are in Year 5. A rough timeline of the procedures in moving to secondary school is outlined below:

Year 5 Spring/ Summer Term

  • Secondary preference forms from the Local Authority are sent home
  • Parents visit secondary schools to help with decision making.

Year 5 Summer Term

  • Secondary school preference forms are returned to the Local Authority (these can be sent into school to be returned).

Year 6  Autumn/ Spring Term

  • Secondary school places allocated.
  • Parents notified of secondary school allocated.

Year 6 Summer Term

  • Transition work begins with children in school.
  • Children spend a day at their new school;

Which Secondary School?

All of the children at Langley School have a statement of special educational needs and so many of our pupils continue their education in a secondary special school. There are also mainstream schools which have special units to accommodate pupils with a statement.

As a school, we can by no means tell you which school to choose for your child but we can offer some pointers. It is likely that secondary transfer will be discussed at annual review for pupils in Year 5.  Some points to consider:
  • Size: we are a small school – how many other pupils could your child cope with?
  • Needs: does the school cater for the needs of your child?
  • Location: how much travelling will be involved? Some schools encourage independent travel to school.
