At Langley School, phonics is taught every day through the SSP Little Wandle. Teaching is carefully matched to each child's stage of development, ensuring that every pupil receives the support they need to become a confident and successful reader. 

Roots 

In our Roots pathway, phonics is delivered through Foundations for Phonics Nursery Rhymes. Sessions are highly engaging and make use of concrete objects, music, movement and stimulating sensory resources to develop the essential skills that underpin reading. 

Learning focuses on the foundations of phonics, including: 

  • * Listening and attention 

  • * Sound discrimination 

  • * Visual discrimination 

  • * Rhythm and rhyme 

  • * Environmental and instrumental sounds 

  • * Communication and language 

Alongside whole-class sessions, children receive 1:1 phonics sessions throughout the week that are carefully adapted to their individual needs and stage of learning. 

Branches 

Children in our Branches pathway continue to develop the foundations of phonics through Foundations for Phonics Nursery Rhymes, ensuring they have secure listening and sound discrimination skills before and alongside learning grapheme-phoneme (letter-sound) correspondences. 

Each child also receives regular 1:1 phonics teaching sessions throughout the week. These sessions are precisely matched to ongoing assessment, enabling staff to revisit learning, address misconceptions and celebrate small but significant steps of progress. 

Leaves 

Children in our Leaves pathway receive phonics teaching either 1:1 or in small groups, depending on their individual learning needs and stage of development. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our systematic synthetic phonics programme, with teaching adapted where appropriate to meet the needs of our learners. 

For children who have completed the phonics programme, reading teaching moves beyond decoding to focus on fluency, prosody and comprehension through the Little Wandle Fluency reading series. This enables pupils to develop confidence, accuracy and a deeper understanding of what they read, helping them become thoughtful and independent readers.
